Alexa ranking, spam and a notsogood review…
Crazy thought here, but I have noticed that the lower my Alexa rank is - the more spam I am getting to my comments! I wonder if the spammers are fueled by the lower Alexa rankings. My current numbers are 271,098, and this week I have been getting bombarded by a crap load of spam.
Perhaps it’s because I have been more active in the social networks too. The more my name is out there - the more crap I will get to my site I suppose.
Thankfully I (and everyone else!) Have the Akismet anti spam plugin. This thing has been a lifesaver for me. I can only imagine how long it would take me to weed out all the spam I get on a daily basis. The spam that ends up on my blogs that is. Not my emails. Those have different programs. Two actually.
Just as a heads up, In case you noticed a missing link on my site - I have decided to delete my account with “Sponsored Reviews.” Seriously, I really am going to say - do not join if you are thinking about it.
I signed up for them, way back in January I believe, and I have still not done any reviews. It’s not because I have not done any searching and bidding either. But because it takes forever for anything to happen. In total, I put in for 4 companies to review. Out of the four (one was for the site itself!) three have been over a month - and I have not heard a thing. The one bid I did hear on, was rejected.
As you all know - I am picky as to what I will write reviews on, And the fact that that I just have a small number out there and not any are moving has been really ticking me off.
So today, I decided to cancel my account with them. I deleted my blog and sent them an email. I still have a few different accounts at other review sites, so I am all set. It just ticks me off though. As far as I am concerned, you gotta listen and pay attention to your clients and customers. And if you cannot or do not have enough people in your company to do all the work that it needed, you either need to:
1 - get off the hands and do it yourself
2 - let the clients know so they are not feeling like they have been left in the dark.
This was not happening at “Sponsored Reviews.” I waited and waited. But nothing ever happened. I really do not need to be waiting for them when I have blogs that I need to get off the ground. I felt like I was being left in the dark all the time. I even sent out an email at one point and it took them a while to get back to me. Not good, since I am a stickler when it comes to email replies.
So, unless they hire more people, or start taking care of their clients and all that, I will not be reapplying for an account. I guess I will just stick with my PayPerPost.
At least with them I am making money. And I get replies on a timely basis when I email them. For the most part anyway.
I don’t know if anyone checked my review out about my new 19 inch Acer monitor? If not, go check it out at TheBlogSearcher.com…. The monitor is so very purdy….
I am loving it!
So, get this - I spent most of the night on Thursday and a good part of Friday, after work replacing DLL files on my computer.
Someone who shall remain nameless guy friend somehow clicked on something porn maybe? that caused my computer to throw out/corrupt some DLL files on my damn computer!
So everytime it started up it would hang! I was so ticked off! Mostly because he used Internet Explorer which sucks and we all know how damn vulnerable that can be. There must have been a BHO (Browser helper object) that was trying to run and it was loading on startup I think.
Anyways, When I got home I went and did a sfc and it worked. Glad it did because I would have been livid had I spent the whole weekend reinstalling things!
Computer has been fine. So I am happy. Just incase though, I uploaded all my photos oto my Snapfish account…
So, Back to the Alexa thing… Has anyone experienced the same Alexa/spam connection? I am curious.

Thank you for the photo credit. It is appreciated.
Dogbomb, (now that I know what photo…lol) Thank YOU very much for the use of it!
I think it may have to do with the age of your blog and the articles that were dugg or stumbled. I have one post that I wrote on my blog back in November that gets spam all of the time and it happens to have been dugg. I think the spammers were out in full force this week, I received 8 spam posts in one day on that same post last week.
B Carter’s last blog post..My Top Entrecard Droppers as of March 13th, 2008
B Carter, That’s a good thought too. I do get a lot of stumbles now that I think of it! And maybe, when they see the low Alexa rank, they figure that it gets a few more hits then the higher ones…They were out in force last week! That’s for sure…
I didn’t put two and two together but you may be right. I am bombarded with Spam and it is getting worse as my Alexa drops. I just checked…my blog is 14 weeks old and I have 1093 spams blocked by Alexa.
That averages 78 a week.
Those spammers are busy little buggers arent they.
Bill’s last blog post..Entrecard - The Drug Dealer for Blog Traffic
Bill, I agree with you. That is a ton of spam! I only get around 10-15 a day. At least I was last week. Actually has been a bit better today.
Actually, I’m also getting spam comments on some of my posts.. Yeah, it feels bad to see those unrelated stuffs.. Imgaine, how would you apprecaite comments like “xxzxzxzxzx”.. Wow, such comment is horrible..
Joliber Mapiles’s last blog post..How Important is Blog Post Editing?
@ Joliber, lol…I just got a spam from “beefyjeffsex” WTF is THAT! Hahahaha…….
I’m ashamed to say I have no idea what my Alexa rating is, but I do know my Technorati one is good. I hate spam and I get a lot of it too.
Tammy’s last blog post..PETS
@ Tammy, that’s ok! I will write a post about it in the future to describe it for ya. Or I can at least find you a good link to read!
I don’t really know what to make of Alexa anymore. The statistics on that site largely depend on visitors having the toolbar, so Alexa can log their visit to a site, so if a visitor doesn’t have it, the value may change, something that I’ve noticed ever since I was added to a directory automatically. The traffic is all right, but all of the visitors don’t have Alexa, which means that the ratio lowers.
I’ve received occasional spam comments, but now I’ve reactivated the comment moderation feature (because it was driving me a little mad keeping up with manual deletions).
Anastasia’s last blog post..What Price Marriage?
@ Anastasia, That is the only bad thing about Alexa, you gotta download the toolbar, and most people don’t use web browsers for anything else then checking email and simple web surfing. So what would they care what their rank was, ya know?
